Der Yaris der ersten Generation ist Nachfolger des Toyota Starlet. Es standen Ottomotoren mit 1,0 l oder 1,3 l und ein 1,4 l (D4-D) Common Rail-Turbo-Dieselmotor (55 kW), bis auf den Diesel alle mit zweifach obenliegender Nockenwelle (DOHC), zu Verfügung. Außerdem wurde in einigen europäischen Ländern eine Sportversion namens Yaris TS mit einem 1,5 l VVT-i-Saugmotor und 105 PS angeboten. In der Schweiz erschien sogar eine limitierte Sonderauflage mit einem 1,5 l Turbomotor mit 150 PS mit dem Namen Yaris TS Turbo. Der Toyota-Haustuner TTE bot außerdem einen Kompressor-Kit an, der den 1,5-l-Motor auf 140 PS bringt.T

Toyota Yaris II : le compromis idéal ?

Parmi les petites, elle rejoint la Renault Modus et la Peugeot 1007 aussi compactes qu'elle, et les plus longues d'au moins 24 cm comme la Renault Clio III
